Troy Turner whole lotta blues CATEGORY: Blues - jazz RELEASE DATE: 07.01.10 PRICE: $15.98
  |
| DESCRIPTION: Troy Turner got his taste of the blues first-hand. The anguish you hear in every note he plays is not something he copped from somebody else's style. It comes from the pain of growing up next to poverty and abuse, being weaned on the gospel music of your parents and knowing your only hope for redemption is your music. |

HOWARD TATE blue day CATEGORY: Blues - jazz RELEASE DATE: 08.12.08 PRICE: $15.98
  |
DESCRIPTION: Howard Tate – whose 1967 seminal R&B masterpiece, “Get It While You Can,” created a cult of followers who’ve swooned for 40 years over his rare and smoky falsetto vocals – has nailed down his place in history as one of the greatest blues and soul singers of all time.
"Blue Day" is a righteosu return to Howard tate's roots as a blues singer, a balladeer and a master of R&B. Higlights of the album include a title track that rips into the blues traditions of John Lee Hooker and ZZ Top; an ode to Amy Winehouse called "Miss Beehive","Buried Treasure," with a scorching lead guitar melded hand-in-glove to Tate's vocals; and "Improvising," written specifically for Tate and his approach to the music business.
"'Blue day' is the kind of album I've been wanting to record for more than decades," said Tate. “It was a team effort, and we assembled the right team to complement my vocals for this album.”
Nashville based Jon Tiven, who's worked on albums for Wilson Pickett, Betty Harris and Garnet Mimms, produced "Blue Day." He wrote most of the 15 tunes on the album and performs on guitar, saxophone and Hammond organ.
Steve Cropper of the Blues Brothers Band and Stax Records, with Felix Cavaliere of the Young Rascals, upped the ante by contributing songwriting and performing talent on a rollicking, breezy, big-band blues tune called “First Class.” |

Jon Tiven produced the album and co_wrote most of the songs with collaborators such as Dan Penn, Little Milton Campbell, Spooner Oldham, Felix Cavaliere and Marty Brown, and most of them join Garnet on his record as well as Nashvillians Buddy Miller, Jonell Mosser, Wayne Jackson, and Los Angeles' own P.F. Sloan(who wrote a new song"limitless" for the set).

Ken Saydak it's my soul CATEGORY: Blues - jazz RELEASE DATE: 07.12.05 PRICE: $15.98
  |
DESCRIPTION: Evidence Music, Inc. is proud to announce the release of IT’S MY SOUL, a rousing collection of blues by singer/songwriter/piano player Ken Saydak.
Ken, a native of Chicago, began his professional career in 1972 and has played and recorded with some blues giants including Lonnie Brooks, Mighty Joe Young, Johnny Winter and Otis Rush. After cutting his teeth playing gigs in the Chicago area, Ken joined the Mighty Joe Young Band in 1974 and spent five years backing the legend while absorbing the blues scene. In 1979, he joined the Lonnie Brooks Blues Band and toured throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe.
In 1984, Ken was asked to record with Texas blues legend Johnny Winter. That collaboration lasted several years with Ken appearing on three more Winter albums and providing tour support for the Grammy® nominated Gunslinger. In 1987, Ken co-founded the roots-rock band Big Shoulders. Their two releases on Rounder Records were critical successes and resulted in a national profile for the eclectic band. In the early 1990’s, Dave Specter asked Saydak to play on his debut album for Delmark Records. For the remainder of the decade, Ken’s reputation as an in-demand piano player grew and he appeared on numerous Delmark releases over that period.
In 1998, Ken produced and recorded his first solo album, Foolish Man for Delmark. The album highlighted his skills on piano, organ and accordion, generating critical praise throughout the blues community. His next release, Love Without Trust, featured an expanded band and still more bouncing blues piano, again attracting critical praise.
It’s My Soul features 13 good-time, rocking, blues tunes displaying his growth as a songwriter. Ken has a writing credit on 11 of the 13 songs. This is where Ken Saydak fulfills the promise shown earlier in his career.

JODY WILLIAMS you left me in the dark CATEGORY: Blues - jazz RELEASE DATE: 05.11.04 PRICE: $15.98
  |
DESCRIPTION: You Left Me In The Dark is the brilliant follow up to his "comeback" album, the W.C. Handy Award-winning Return Of A Legend from 2002 after a too long, self-imposed hiatus. He has become a cultural icon and his unique guitar style still provides nourishment for the soul.
To call his original blues tunes and playing timeless would be a disservice if it implied that they are retro. On the contrary, they embody the sound and spirit of classic electric blues in all its lusty exuberance.
PRODUCER’S NOTE
Watching Jody’s remarkable renaissance since June, 2000 has been a major thrill. He’s made friends and fans everywhere he’s gone, from Finland to Japan. Accolades for Jody and his comeback CD “Return Of A Legend” (most recently a W.C. Handy Award and selection by Living Blues readers and critics as “Outstanding Guitarist”) have been extraordinary enough to make the sequel a challenge, but one to which Jody was more than equal. Before his re-emergence, Jody was renowned as a brilliant studio guitarist with a handful of highly regarded, often instrumental singles to his own credit. “Return Of A Legend” was a reiteration of past glories, but also a harbinger that the Jody Williams of today (and his earlier career) is no mere sideman, but a creative songwriter of timeless intelligence and humor, a poised and polished vocalist and a bandleader by inclination. Since “Return,” Jody has continued to refine his playing (with a healthy Billy Butler influence in there with T-Bone, B.B. and his own distinctive flair), and to develop familiarity with a stable, capable working band. He’s constantly filling notebook pages and recorders with new material. Basking in worldwide acclaim has only reinforced the unmissable joy in Jody’s music which draws so much comment. To me “You Left Me In The Dark” offers affirmation, growth and still more revelations, not to mention enjoyable and rewarding studio reunions with Jody’s most venerated mentor Robert Jr. Lockwood, and with Lonnie Brooks, whom Jody was one of the first to befriend when Lonnie arrived in Chicago during Jody’s initial heyday. Working with Jody’s class, talent and attitude is a special treat, and offers its own joys. Jody and I offer thanks to all who have made the ride so great, and hope each listener shares that same joy which Jody’s music and the reaction bring us. And I hope that his now substantial body of new work establishes that even though much of Jody’s legend remains based on who he was and the immortal Chicago blues of the 1950s and ‘60s to which he contributed so much, he deserves just as much recognition for who he is in the New Millennium– a complete and vital man and artist to be treasured for his present and his past.---- Dick Shurman 12/03
