BOBBY WATSON the year of the rabbit
This CD is a tribute to Johnny "Rabbit" Hodges, famed alto player for the Duke Ellington Orchestra, who, along with Charlie Parker and Phil Woods, is one the three most famous altoists in jazz history. All the tunes here, except one Watson original, were associated with Hodges, and comprise a thoughtful, exquisite program of both well-known and obscure gems written by the Rabbit, Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. To do justice to the concept, Watson recruited his own nine-piece mini-Ellington orchestra of veteran players for this live recording.
